I was able to get the patch I needed before for 5. If you haven't already, you'll probably need to register for a trial of vSphere 5. Ok, out of curiosity, why shouldn't I use SSH? I think in the long run I am just going to burn the ISO and do it through the upgrade booting from the disc but I don't understand not using Putty or something similar to SSH in Just a matter of preference - I prefer to do whatever I can without logging into the host directly or via SSH.
Maybe its just the wording but "I can't afford to lose anything" sounds frantic. Are you walking on eggshells? You should be in a situation where worst case scenario is you will have to roll back a day. It sounds like in your case whatever you lose is gone. Do you have backups? The host upgrade doesn't directly affect the vms but if your esxi install is on the same drive or array as your vms make sure you select the preserve datastore option.
If you aren't already I'd install to a USB drive. If you are unfamiliar with this process and want to be safe create a VM in vmplayer and install to the usb drive in that. You just mount the iso and mount the usb drive and start the vm. When complete take the usb drive plug it into your server and boot it up. The major difficulty with 5. If you're not going to upgrade, you should at least look at updates. ESXi 5 "vanilla" won't run Windows8 and Windows vm's without a few patches installed. I'm playing with the Update Manager right now. Out of the box it's a pretty complex beast baselines, etc but it looks to be the easiest way to manage the updates without fumbling through the command lines.
Not that I don't like CLI's, but there are some days where the coffee isn't strong enough and my eyes don't keep up with the fingers ;. I want to start testing out Windows Server , but when I boot the installation iso it fails. All searches I've done on this have pointed to the fact that my version of ESXi doesn't support Windows Server and for that matter Windows 8. Is it safe to assume that I need to install each patch in sequence, or could I just jump to the latest patch and hope that all subsequent patches are included?
You will want to update to 5. Depending on the patch and what it is addressing, most patches from vmware for ESXi are cumulative. You can apply the latest. As always, make sure you read the details of what is included in the patches before deployment.
Also, if you use update manager, alot of this guess-work is removed for you. Since you have two, can you migrate the VMs around? One question: Even though the update was successful according to the output from the commands, there was a whole list of VIBs skipped. Any idea why this is? When using the standard profile in the patch file, I would have thought it would apply all VIBs. Well, I guess VIBs would be updated only if they are older than presented one which include in patch. If all VIBs going to be overwritten over and over again, it may cause some problem 1st one is the reboot required so it will check and skip those VIBs which are OK.
AFAIK and I saw, each update contains all needed files from previous updates so if you already have host with newer source, update process may skip some VIBs. May I ask if you ever applied any update to this host manually or using VUM and if not, what was the built number of the host you have updated?
I've used the profile command in the past and it took a long time to update. This weekend I used the vib command and it updated really quick. ESXi 5. However, this might change with newer updates. I'm not sure why the "profile" command takes longer.

For methods for upgrading from ESXi 4. I have installed HP esxi image. You can use the "esxcli software profile update" method. If you use it with the standard VMware bundle then you will keep the existing HP bundles and drivers.
However, it is better to use the update method with the HP customized zip bundle, because that will also update the HP software and drivers.
